I was moving up the 'corporate ladder' at an incredibly fast pace. Who knew just how far I could go. Then one day it hit me. Something wasn't right… or at least not right for me. The hours were long, the travel grueling. I felt my enthusiasm and life's energy being sucked right out of my body. I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do with my life, but I knew it wasn't this. I took a long weekend and got away. I needed a chance to think … and think I did. Saturday night I had a dream and the picture of my new life started to take shape. Sunday morning I woke up with a "fire in the belly" that was incredible, and I was off and running -- to start my own business. Even though I had only $5,012 in savings, I did have a vision for this company and for myself … certain goals that I wanted to achieve, things I wanted to do. I was so excited. I'm not sure my feet were touching the ground! I wanted to share my enthusiasm with those people who I thought were important in my daily life. The first thing I did was to tell my friends and colleagues at work that I was leaving my job to start my own company. Instead of hearing "that's great" and "you'll do well", these so-called friends said things like "you did what!?" , "you're kidding, aren't you", and "good luck … you're going to need it". Talk about encouragement and support! Sheez! Well, that got me thinking I'd made the wrong decision. But I kept going. Next I began investigating the practical aspects of starting a new business…. I should tell you I had absolutely NO background in business - no management skills that I knew of. My accounting knowledge consisted of balancing my checkbook. I'd never taken any courses in marketing and I had no experience in direct sales. But I still had an idea for a great product … and my own personal goals and expectations. So these little details weren't going to stop me. At that time (remember, this was way before the Internet) I spent hundreds of dollars on books from so-called "experts" on sales and marketing. Years later I realized that while their overblown theories might have worked for large organizations, there was absolutely NO WAY their assumptions would ever work for a small business on a shoestring budget. My savings dwindled down to practically nothing - after all, I still had rent, food, utilities and a car payment to cover. I dropped my health insurance because it seemed expensive … and I had absolutely no intent of getting sick! I began to use my credit cards just to cover everyday expenses. I found myself working 60, then 70 …and then 80 hours a week. I spent so much time working on "the process" (you know … things like setting up the accounting software, studying where and how to advertise, evaluating potential software packages I wanted to use for keeping track of prospective customers etc.) that I got further behind in creating "the product". After several months of knocking my head against the wall and getting nowhere, I realized I was tired of hearing "I told you so" from the people I socialized with. . . so I quit socializing! Finally, out of desperation, I went to my Dad for guidance, or maybe just to be consoled. He gave me a piece of advice that I'll never forget. I went home and immediately began to apply his pearls of wisdom … and they worked! OK. Let's fast forward … In 2001 I sold my corporation to an organization from the United Kingdom. Over the years my company had grown from a small one man, then two-person "Mom and Pop" business, to employing over 70 technical specialists and 15 sales representatives. We did several million dollars in sales each year.
